The film Bluegrass Journey featuring Tim is now available in the store on DVD.

SYNOPSIS
This passionate and affecting performance documentary celebrates the virtuoso artistry and joyous community of contemporary bluegrass music. Musically depicting many of the traditional roots and some of the more far-reaching branches of the genre, BLUEGRASS JOURNEY employs verite footage, thoughtful interviews, and vividly captured extended performances to weave a seamless tapestry that transports and enraptures the devoted fan and newcomer alike. Featuring some of the most celebrated practitioners of this traditional-sounding but still evolving musical form, the film presents a sonically rich and visually stunning portrait that often leaves viewers suppressing applause and cheers after each number. Musical performances by such bluegrass luminaries as the Del McCoury Band, Peter Rowan, Tim O'Brien, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Rhonda Vincent, Nickel Creek, and many others, create an indelible impression that leaves no doubt about why this timeless music has exploded in popularity in recent years. Exhilarating, joyous and rich, intelligent and timely, BLUEGRASS JOURNEY will leave you wanting to hear more. (86 minutes, USA, 2003)

Homespun DVD Now Available!
04/08/2004

"The Mandolin and Bouzouki of Tim O'Brien" lesson on Homespun DVD is now available at the website store.

From the Homespun description:

Tim O'Brien's artistry is unique, crossing boundaries between bluegrass, old time, Irish, country and folk music styles. His heartfelt singing, instrumental virtuosity and profound songwriting have put him at the very pinnacle of today's acoustic performers.

Tim O'Brien's course will be a boon to mandolin and bouzouki (octave mandolin) players who want to improve their technique, develop ideas and learn new repertoire. Whether he's breaking down an Irish slip jig, an old time mountain ballad, a bluegrass tune or an original country/pop song, Tim brings his brilliant musicianship and formidable technique to bear, making these pieces fun and enlightening for learning players.

The tunes and techniques that Tim teaches can be played on either instrument. Switching between mandolin and bouzouki (they are tuned to the same notes one octave apart), he demonstrates right and left hand techniques and the advantages of each for soloing, song accompaniment and how to get the most out of their respective textures and tonalities.

Each song or instrumental that Tim teaches will bring you greater facility on your instrument. They include "Down in a Willow Garden," "The High Road," "Lay Down Your Weary Tune," "One Girl Cried," "More Love," "The Kid on the Mountain" and "Travelers."

Note: Even if you don't have a bouzouki, there's plenty of material on this lesson to keep mandolinists busy for a long time!

The self-produced album, released in conjunction Tim's own Howdy Skies Records, boasts 12 new tracks and appearances by some of contemporary folk's instrumental giants, including John Doyle, Dirk Powell, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, and Bela Fleck to name a few. "Traveler" is in stores August 12 and is available through this website.

Stephen Owsley Smith Cittern

A cittern is like a bouzouki or octave mandolin, except that it has five pairs of strings to the bouzouki's four. These five pairs are tuned in a variety of ways. I'm still experimenting with tunings, but like the most often used tuning of (low pair to high pair) D - G - D - A - D. This one is the big version, with a scale length is 24 and 3/4 inches. Mine has beautiful fingerboard inlay of a blue heron taking flight from a marsh. The back and sides are Koa wood, and the top is Italian spruce. Steve's instruments are made in the classic style favored by players of celtic music. Steve lives in Taos New Mexico and his web site is www.celticmusic.com/steve.
